چکیده

Overview Chemotherapy-induced (or radiotherapy-induced) vomiting (emesis) and nausea can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life, leading to poor compliance with further chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment. Nausea and vomiting can also result in metabolic imbalances, degeneration of self-care and functional ability, nutrient depletion, anorexia, decline of performance status and mental status, wound dehiscence, esophageal tears, and withdrawal from potentially useful or curative anticancer treatment.1–4 The incidence and severity of nausea and/or vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy (or both) are affected by numerous factors, including 1) specific chemotherapeutic agents used; 2) dosage of the agents; 3) schedule and route NCCN

Long-term use of intrathecal droperidol as an excellent antiemetic in nonmalignant pain--a retrospective study.

UNLABELLED Over the past five years our pain practice encountered eight patients (5 female, 3 male) with chronic non-malignant pain syndromes, in whom any meaningful pain reduction via opioid analgesics (either by oral or systemic and/or intraspinal route) had resulted in profound nausea and/or vomiting despite generous use of available and/or affordable anti-emetics. After obtaining proper con...

Optimising antiemesis in cancer chemotherapy: efficacy of continuous versus intermittent infusion of high dose metoclopramide in emesis induced by cisplatin.

Thirty three untreated patients being given cisplatin received metoclopramide (7 mg/kg) for antiemesis by either continuous or intermittent infusion in a random order. Each patient received intravenous dexamethasone in addition. High pressure liquid chromatography was used to measure plasma concentrations of metoclopramide. The two regimens were evaluated for antiemetic efficacy and the inciden...

Can acupuncture have specific effects on health? A systematic review of acupuncture antiemesis trials.

The effects of acupuncture on health are generally hard to assess. Stimulation of the P6 acupuncture point is used to obtain an antiemetic effect and this provides an excellent model to study the efficacy of acupuncture. Thirty-three controlled trials have been published worldwide in which the P6 acupuncture point was stimulated for treatment of nausea and/or vomiting associated with chemothera...

Can granisetron injection used as primary prophylaxis improve the control of nausea and vomiting with low- emetogenic chemotherapy?

MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a single-centre, prospective cohort study. A total of 96 patients...

Combination therapy for postoperative nausea and vomiting - a more effective prophylaxis?

The problem of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains far from being resolved. Despite the introduction of new classes of antiemetics and a vast amount of published research, there is a general impression that there has been little progress in this area. The multifactorial etiology of PONV might be better addressed using a combination of drugs acting at different receptor sites. This ...
